AI’s highest enterprise leverage comes from team-scaled solutions: small, reusable tools that remove recurring team friction under lightweight governance. The durable advantage is not coding speed alone; it is human architecture, discernment, and risk-aware collaboration across delivery, compliance, and risk teams.
Just two days ago, Maxime Beauchemin (creator of Apache Airflow and Superset) published “AI Enablement Engineer: The Highest-Leverage Role in Tech”. His core argument struck a deep chord: the highest-leverage work right now isn’t building yet another personal agent; it’s creating the systems, context layers, guardrails, and toolkits that let entire teams solve real problems with AI and move faster together.
That piece felt like external confirmation of the direction I’ve been exploring. What I previously called hyper-team software is better understood as team-scaled software solutions: lightweight, reusable micro-apps built by small cross-functional teams where domain experts also bring deep technical capability, working with AI assistants plus technical and project colleagues at the appropriate cadence and depth. These solutions solve repeated team-level friction and can be shared safely within the group.
It also builds on themes from my earlier posts on hyper-team software and grand design. Maxime’s AI Enablement Pyramid is a useful capability lens; in regulated environments it should be paired with a risk lens where data classification determines governance depth and scrutiny at each level.
The overlap is striking
Team-scaled software solutions deliver exactly the kind of practical, team-focused enablement that an AI Enablement Engineer would champion, but with minimal ceremony and strong local ownership.
Where Maxime emphasises context layers and special-purpose agents with proper guardrails, team-scaled solutions can deliver similar outcomes through a lightweight, language-agnostic foundation: project/dependency management, file-native data persistence, simple web UIs, spreadsheet export tooling, and configuration-driven templates. In practice, this is often Python-centric, but it is not tied to any single language.
You get tools that can be built in days/weeks rather than months, including representative patterns such as:
- Onboarding copilots that reduce first-week friction and speed up contribution
- Delivery-reporting automations that treat the work-management platform as the single source of truth for data entry, then extract data via API for stakeholder-ready reporting, analysis, and short-horizon forecasting
- Workflow friction fixers that remove repetitive hand-offs in internal processes
- Feedback synthesis tools that surface themes from surveys, tickets, and customer comments
- Team registries that make ownership, controls, and review points visible from day one
Discoverability and reuse happen through the “App Arcade” catalogue, supported by proportional governance: a simple registration index, a practical five-question decision test, dry-run modes, quarterly short demos, and easy disable paths. An app curator can then look for recurring themes and refactoring opportunities so useful solutions can be leveraged more broadly across the enterprise.
It’s federated rather than centralised. Teams own what they build, while light visibility keeps things safe and auditable. In practice, governance intensity should scale with context:
- In regulated industries, this model works best when delivery teams partner closely with tech/tech-aligned teams so that enterprise standards, compliance, and risk management obligations are fulfilled without stalling delivery.
- The nature and classification of captured data should inform a solution’s risk classification and, in turn, the level of governance and scrutiny applied.
Where “Grand Design” thinking becomes essential
As AI commoditises raw implementation speed, the real multiplier, as I argued in the previous post, shifts to human-led architecture and discernment.
Good architecture doesn’t just make humans faster; it makes AI assistance far more reliable. Clear component boundaries, explicit abstractions, and testable quality expectations give the AI a well-defined design space to operate in. Without that structure, even rapid AI-assisted coding leads to inconsistency, hidden dependencies, and eventual rework.
In team-scaled solutions this means:
- Treating configuration and data handling choices as first-class architectural decisions that keep tools lightweight and maintainable
- Prioritising humble listening to repeated team friction before writing code
- Designing for easy disablement and visibility from day one
- Building composable primitives that let AI collaborate effectively rather than generate ad-hoc code
The AI Enablement Engineer mindset and team-scaled solutions converge here: both reject pure speed in favour of sustainable leverage. This model offers a pragmatic, often Python-centric but language-agnostic path ideally suited to medium-sized organisations or individual teams that want real enablement today without waiting for enterprise-wide platforms or heavy orchestration layers.
What this looks like in action
Imagine a small cross-functional team running an iterative build-refine loop:
- Spots a repeated friction, for example needing better reporting, analysis, and forecasting while keeping the work-management platform as the system of record for data entry
- Rapidly builds a lightweight first version with AI assistance using familiar team tooling
- Engages relevant partners at the right gates/checkpoints (for example tech, project, risk, compliance), at the appropriate cadence and depth for the use case
- Refines the solution based on real usage and feedback, then repeats targeted partner checkpoints as scope evolves

The result isn’t shadow IT; it’s visible, governed, and genuinely multiplies team capacity while respecting risk and control.
Looking ahead
As AI capabilities advance, the organisations that thrive won’t necessarily be those with the most agents or the most sophisticated central platforms. They’ll be the ones that combine three practical elements:
- Rapid local experimentation and delivery using AI assistance
- Thoughtful human architecture and discernment to keep solutions coherent and maintainable
- Lightweight, federated enablement and governance that scale useful solutions safely across teams
Team-scaled software solutions are one practical expression of that combination. They preserve the joy and velocity of individual craftsmanship while adding the safety and leverage of thoughtful team-wide sharing.
